A Summer in the City: What an Internship at Voscap Taught One Law Student About the Professional World
EXPERIENCING THE PACE, PROFESSIONALISM AND PURPOSE OF BUSINESS RECOVERY
For many students, the transition from academic life to the professional world can feel like stepping into the unknown. But for 18-year-old law student Michael Georgiou, interning with Voscap Business Recovery in June 2025 offered a front-row seat to what life in a central London corporate environment truly entails — from tailored suits and 9–5 schedules to real-world insolvency casework and lunches with the boss.
Internships like these are about more than just ticking a box on a CV. They provide valuable insight into how businesses operate, how professionals collaborate, and how academic knowledge translates into commercial reality.
LEARNING FROM REAL-WORLD CASES
During his time at Voscap, Michael assisted with core administrative tasks on live insolvency cases. This included reviewing bank statements, sorting fee review sheets, ensuring all software systems were up to date, and entering key financial data into Excel. The experience offered exposure to the procedural backbone of the business recovery process — and showed how attention to detail is crucial when dealing with client finances.
The pace was fast, and expectations were clear: dress professionally, arrive on time, and be prepared to contribute from day one. For a student who had never worked in central London before, it was an exciting immersion into the energy of the capital’s business district — complete with the occasional lunch out with senior staff to talk careers and future goals.
THE VALUE OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR LAW STUDENTS
“I am currently studying Law at Nottingham Trent University. Interning at Voscap was a very insightful and beneficial experience for me,” Michael explains.
“Working in such an environment has allowed me to enhance and develop my commercial awareness — a very important aspect of pursuing a career in Law. Being able to apply the knowledge I’ve learnt during my degree, while also strengthening my understanding in the field of insolvency, has massively supported my studies.”
Michael’s experience reinforces the idea that legal training doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Understanding how businesses run — and how they recover from financial difficulty — is key to building a well-rounded legal skillset. Insolvency and restructuring are increasingly relevant areas of practice, and exposure to these areas early on offers students a competitive edge.
OBSERVING TEAMWORK AND TACTICAL THINKING
What stood out most to Michael wasn’t just the work itself, but the way the Voscap team handled it.
“Something I found particularly interesting was watching how a firm with such a high volume of cases can delegate them between staff so efficiently,” he says. “Each member of the team had specific strengths, and they were all able to use them to the advantage of each other as well as the firm as a whole.”
This ability to observe and understand internal collaboration gave Michael a deeper appreciation for how different departments and roles align to keep things running smoothly, especially under pressure.
ENCOURAGING YOUNG PEOPLE TO EXPLORE DIVERSE PATHS
Internships like this one don’t just benefit the student — they enrich businesses too. Youth bring fresh energy, a willingness to learn, and new perspectives. Yet too many talented students never get the opportunity to see what corporate life is really like.
“I would recommend to anyone starting an internship that the most important thing is to be happy to help,” Michael shares. “Being available to staff and open to learning allows you to settle in faster, while also learning quickly about the field of work you’ve chosen.”
At Voscap, we believe more companies should open their doors to students — not just those already on a set path, but those curious about where they might fit. Whether they pursue a future in law, business, finance, or something else entirely, early professional exposure helps them develop confidence, competence, and clarity about their next steps.
BUILDING A BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE
From mastering Excel and financial documents to navigating a busy office and understanding insolvency in practice, Michael’s experience shows the value of internships done right. For students like him — and for companies willing to invest in youth — these opportunities are more than just summer placements. They’re the foundation for long-term growth, awareness, and career development.
At Voscap, we’re proud to support the next generation of legal and business professionals. If you're a student looking for experience or a company interested in hosting interns, we encourage you to embrace the value of early exposure.
