Part One - Thinking About the CPI Exams? What They Are, How to Revise, and When to Take Them

WHAT ARE THE CPI EXAMS?

For professionals working in the UK insolvency industry, the Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (CPI) is often one of the first major milestones in their professional development.

The CPI is awarded by Insolvency Practitioners Association and is widely recognised across the industry as a qualification that demonstrates a solid understanding of insolvency procedures, legislation and professional practice.

For many people working in insolvency roles—particularly administrators, case handlers and junior professionals—the CPI acts as a stepping stone toward more senior positions and can eventually form part of the pathway towards becoming a fully licensed insolvency practitioner.

The exams typically assess knowledge of areas such as:

  • personal and corporate insolvency procedures

  • insolvency legislation and case law

  • professional ethics and regulatory requirements

  • the practical administration of insolvency cases

What this means for industry professionals:

For those working within insolvency, the CPI provides a recognised way to demonstrate technical knowledge and commitment to progressing within the profession.

WHY THE CPI MATTERS IN THE INSOLVENCY INDUSTRY

Insolvency is a highly regulated field where professionals must deal with complex legislation, creditor rights and business restructuring.

Because of this, qualifications such as the CPI help ensure that those working in the industry have a strong understanding of both the legal framework and the practical responsibilities involved in insolvency work.

Employers often view the CPI as evidence that someone is serious about developing their career in insolvency. In many firms, it is also seen as an important step for those aiming to move into senior case management or specialist roles.

What this means for industry professionals:

While it is not mandatory for every role, the CPI is widely regarded as an important qualification for anyone looking to progress within insolvency and restructuring.

A CONVERSATION WITH VOSCAP’S ANTHONY VOSKOU

At VOSCAP, one of our team members currently preparing for the exams is Anthony Voskou, who plans to sit the CPI this coming June.

Anthony has worked as an insolvency administrator for several years and recently decided that the time was right to take the next step.

“As an administrator working in insolvency, I felt it was time to attempt the CPI exam so that I can progress my career. In order to get to a more senior level, you should pass the CPI.”

His experience reflects a common point in many insolvency professionals’ careers—after gaining practical experience on cases, the CPI becomes a natural progression.

What this means for industry professionals:

The CPI often becomes most relevant once professionals have gained some hands-on experience in insolvency and are looking to move toward more senior responsibilities.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE CPI EXAMS

Like most professional exams, preparation for the CPI requires consistent study and a structured approach to revision.

Anthony has been studying with an online provider while developing his own personal revision techniques to reinforce the material.

“I’m making plenty of colourful notes, mostly in the form of spider diagrams, and making sure I repeat and remember the material weekly.”

Alongside structured learning, he has also focused heavily on past exam papers and practical testing.

“I read a lot of past papers and the answers. Anything I don’t know, I make a study card on it and ask my friends and family to test me.”

This combination of active revision, repetition and exam practice is often recommended by those who have already completed the qualification.

What this means for industry professionals:

Developing a consistent study routine and regularly revisiting key concepts can make a significant difference when preparing for professional exams like the CPI.

WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO TAKE THE CPI?

One question many professionals ask is when they should attempt the CPI exams.

While there is no single answer, many candidates choose to sit the exams after gaining a few years of practical insolvency experience. At that stage, the technical material often makes more sense because it can be connected directly to real casework.

Anthony admits that the volume of material can feel daunting at times—but the sense of progress makes it worthwhile.

“My advice so far would be to just keep with it. It seems overwhelming at times, but when you start to remember things that were daunting at first, it’s very rewarding.”

What this means for industry professionals:

The CPI is challenging, but many professionals find that with the right preparation and timing it becomes a manageable and rewarding step in their career development.

CONCLUSION

For those working in the insolvency profession, the CPI represents an important opportunity to build technical knowledge and progress toward more senior roles within the industry. As Anthony’s experience shows, preparing for the exams requires commitment and consistent revision—but it can also be an extremely rewarding process as knowledge and confidence grow over time. At VOSCAP, supporting professional development is something we value strongly. Anthony is not the first member of the team that the firm has supported through professional exams, and helping develop professionals within the restructuring and insolvency sector remains an important part of our culture.

What this means for industry professionals:

Investing time in professional qualifications such as the CPI can open doors to new opportunities and career progression within the insolvency industry. And this is only the beginning of Anthony’s journey. Stay tuned for Part Two of this article, where we catch up with him after the exams to find out how they went and what he learned from the experience.
